On super Saturday, 18-year-old Emma Raducanu basked in the glory of success, under the bright sunshine on Arthur Ashe stadium. She defeated Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in a brilliant US Open final. It was an all-teenage battle, with the Brit coming out on top. Along the way, Raducanu broke multiple records. This includes a very peculiar one as well.
US Open champ Emma Raducanu earns bitter-sweet record
The story of teen sensation Raducanu is one written by the angels and gods. She had an absolutely fairy tale time in New York, coming through qualifiers to claim the title. She went through ten matches without dropping a single set, creating history at the US Open. This means that the youngster will earn a ton of points for her recent success, but also puts something in jeopardy next year.

Owing to the fact that Raducanu entered the main draw through qualifiers, she earned 40 points for the preliminary tournament. In addition, she has earned a mammoth 2,000 points for her historic success at Flushing Meadows. In total, this adds up to 2,040 ranking points in all, for the women’s singles winner. This is the highest number of points earned by a player from one tournament. However, on the flip side, this means that even if Emma ends up defending her title next year, she will only make 2,000 points. This means that irrespective of her performance next year at the US Open, she will end up losing points.
Emma Raducanu earned 40 ranking points for her #USOpen qualies wins.
Thus, her 2,040 ranking points for winning the US Open as a qualifier is most ranking points a player has ever earned from a single tournament.
Even if Emma defends the title next year, she will lose points.

Raducanu’s sudden rise has been extraordinary
It all began at Wimbledon 2021, when a young home favorite caught the eyes of the fans. Match after match, Raducanu displayed powerful tennis to surge to victory. Making her way till the fourth round in itself was a gigantic achievement for her. Sadly, she had to pull out of the tournament due to medical reasons, but vowed to be back. Rest assured, she bounced back and how!

At the US Open 2021, the Canada-born star won three qualifying matches, before dominating proceedings in the main draw. En route to her title, she overcame the likes of Olympic champion Belinda Bencic, Roland Garros semifinalist Maria Sakkari, and breakout star Leylah Fernandez. As a result, the Brit has now reached a career-high ranking of No.23 as well.
