From Martina Hingis to Ashleigh Barty, these players shocked the tennis world with their retirement news. One such player is Danielle Collins, who announced a big update about her retirement. What all these players have in common is their gender, which has prompted a response from former World Number 1, Ana Ivanovic.

Yesterday, Collins gave her all but couldn’t get past Iga Swiatek. She went down fighting in a three-set thriller 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, bowing out of the Australian Open. As expected, it has stunned the tennis circuit.

Following her match, the American star announced that she would be retiring from the sport after the 2024 season. As a result, she has already played her final Australian Open and won’t be featuring next year. This news about retirement comes at a time when Collins is just 30.

Recently, Ivanovic appeared on the ES Fancast. During the show, she was asked about Collins’ retirement and what could have led her to this shocking retirement decision. “I mean, it is very hard to say. If you go back to the time of Martina Hingis, they all retired at the age of 26, 27, which is now considered super young. So we went through the era when the players played till almost 40 and now a little bit younger, the reason a lot of pressure, especially on the women’s side, because we just deal differently than men.”

Further, she went on to add, “And I think, naturally we are more emotional, we analyze things differently, view things differently. Being in the spotlight at a young age and for so many years does take a toll.”

After the heartbreaking loss, the American star discussed her retirement plans in an interview. Collins revealed the actual reason why she called time on her illustrious career.

“I have other things that I’d kind of like to accomplish in my life outside of tennis, and would like to be able to kind of, you know, be able to have the time to be able to do that. Obviously having kids is a big priority for me, so.”
