There has been a recent streak of tennis players getting infected with the Coronavirus. Ahead of the Mubadala World Tennis Championships, Emma Raducanu tested positive and had to pull out of the event.

After the exhibition tournament got over in Abu Dhabi, Spanish star Rafael Nadal announced that he tested positive for the virus upon returning to Spain. This puts the Spaniard’s chances of making it to Australia complicated.

Belinda Bencic announces unfortunate news ahead of Australian Open

In yet another instance, Tokyo Olympics Gold medalist Belinda Bencic took to Twitter a few moments ago to share that she tested also positive.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to provide a quick update that unfortunately and even though I am fully vaccinated, I recently tested positive for COVID-19. I am currently isolating and taking all precautionary measurements to get through this as best as possible.” 

Incidentally, Bencic also participated at the Mubadala Championships, where she lost to Ons Jabeur in a three-set battle. Despite experiencing severe symptoms, the Swiss star vowed to be back for the Australian Open once her isolation period gets over.

Bencic saw success at Tokyo Olympics and Billie Jean King Cup this year

Bencic, who had a tough run on the WTA tour this year, shined her way through the women’s singles draw at the Olympic games in Tokyo. She not only won the gold medal in singles but also displayed commendable performances to win a silver medal in the women’s doubles event.

Also, at the Billie Jean King Cup (previously known as Fed Cup), Bencic was instrumental in taking team Switzerland to the finals alongside teammates Jil Teichmann, Viktorija Golubic. The Swiss player was also given the ‘heart’ award for displaying utmost dedication in playing for team Switzerland.

We hope Bencic has a quick recovery and can return in time for the Australian summer.
