Novak Djokovic losing the final of Wimbledon is enough of an event to make the headlines. However, the Djoker evoked more reasons for worldwide coverage. In the second set, Carlos Alcaraz broke a serve from the Serbian player. On the losing track, Djokovic smashed his racket on the net post out of frustration. After the match, he was handed a fine for this move. Along with him, Mirra Andreeva, an up-and-coming WTA player, received a similar fine due to a racket-smashing incident. However, tennis fans are outraged, as Andreeva did not break her racket.

Mirra Andreeva’s similar fine as Novak Djokovic causes an outrage
This year’s Wimbledon final will be remembered for years to come. Alcaraz dethroned Djokovic as a four-time defending champion. But that’s not all! It’s going to be remembered because of Djokovic’s incident. The Serbian player smashed the racket on the post, which evoked a fine of £8,000. Similar to the Serbian, Mirra Andreeva is an up-and-coming Russian player. She also received a fine because of a similar incident during her match against Madison Keys.
Along with the fine, she also received a point penalty. Her penalty proved far more controversial, though. She struck the ground instead of the net post. Her act appears to be far less purposeful than Djokovic’s eruption. Her racket did not appear to be damaged, yet attracted the same fine of £8,000.

Many tennis fans thought it was an unjust decision. Especially given that the punishment should be even more severe for Djokovic. They reasoned that since he had amassed great wealth, it would not have nearly the same impact. Several fans rushed to social media to call attention to the discrepancy.

The common argument was that while both actions warranted some type of punishment, Djokovic should have had a much hefty punishment to motivate him to alter his on-court behavior.
One fan wrote, “Novak’s was deliberate and the fine is correct based on the rules. However, 8k is no deterrent to a man who makes 10’s of millions a year. That rule definitely needs changing.”
Other fans argued that her fine was completely ridiculous as they felt there was no intention of harming the equipment. Some said that he should have been suspended instead of fined. There have been many instances of the Djoker smashing his rackets. Following the track record, the current one would not be the last fine he pays.
