Fans Unhappy With Garbine Muguruza’s Polarizing Comments on Serena Williams

2-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza of Spain recently made some comments on Serena Williams. The Spaniard had talked about how Serena Williams is no longer the dominant force on the WTA tour. However, this has left many fans unhappy with Muguruza.
Of course, there is merit to the World No. 3’s words. In 2021, WTA tournaments across the year saw many different champions. In fact, all four Grand Slams had different winners, with no single player being the surefire favorite to win it all.
Fans of Serena Williams have not taken kindly to Muguruza’s comments

Garbine Muguruza was asked about her thoughts on the current crop of players on the WTA tour. She replied how there are now a lot of championship-caliber players in the WTA and times have changed. Previously, it used to be that one player dominated all throughout the years, much like Serena Williams, which is no longer the case.
Many fans have spoken against Muguruza through Twitter. In fact, one fan asks whether or not Garbine’s words were even relevant at all. “But what point is she really making? Those that can do and those that can just talk about others!“ they said, calling Garbine someone who merely talks about others instead of winning herself.

Similarly, another fan directly compares her to Serena Williams, dismissing Garbine’s credibility by counting her 2 Grand Slams. “There are ICONS, CHAMPS, like Serena, who have nothing to prove. Win more than 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 GRAND SLAM(s), and maybe you’ll have credibility,” they tweeted.

Moreover, someone asked why Garbine was even talking about Serena in the first place. “And, still she can’t win. Why doesn’t she focus on herself instead of all that baggage she’s been carrying for Serena?” they tweeted.

Plenty of support for Garbine as well
On the other hand, there has been plenty of support for Garbine as well. A fan tried to point out what the Spanish star meant about the WTA, and not Serena Williams in particular. “Some people just read the headline and not the article. The women’s field is deep and strong. Anyone can win,” they said, referring to Garbine’s full comments.

Clearly, Garbine Muguruza’s comments on Serena Williams have had an extremely polarizing effect on the tennis fraternity. Nevertheless, it is important to keep in mind that in today’s world, context is everything.
