In 2016, Reddit co-founder and prominent investor and entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian proposed to tennis legend Serena Williams. The tennis ace said yes. However, for most of the world, the key takeaway from Ohanian’s proposal wasn’t Williams’ yes. Instead, it was the engagement ring that Ohanian gave to Williams, which featured an emerald-cut diamond. Ohanian splashed out a mammoth $3 million for it.

The entrepreneur sat down for a Forbes interview earlier this year and revealed how he could afford the ring. As it turns out, Ohanian’s cryptocurrency investments played a key role in allowing him to purchase it.

Ohanian’s quest in purchasing Serena Williams’ engagement ring

Right now, the entire world seems to be aware of cryptocurrency, and there are many willing investors. However, there was a time when cryptocurrency wasn’t as popular, but there were people like Ohanian who believed that it had great potential. After a 2014 meeting with the executives of crypto exchange Coinbase, Ohanian’s crypto investments well and truly began.

Ohanian’s first crypto investment was worth $15,000. This investment helped the entrepreneur purchase 50,000 crypto token ether. As the years passed, ether’s value skyrocketed, and Ohanian’s investment is worth a whopping $83 million right now. In the interview, Ohanian said, “I didn’t invest nearly as much as I should have”.

The entrepreneur’s crypto investments continued, which eventually gave him $50 million. This gave him the purchasing power necessary to give Serena one of the most extravagant engagement rings of all time.

2017 was a landmark year for Alexis Ohanian and Serena Williams, as they welcomed a baby girl, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. Even though Serena Williams endured a difficult childbirth that resulted in life-threatening complications, she recovered. Soon, the couple tied the knot, and so far, the marriage has been a happy one.

Right now, Ohanian and Williams aren’t just husband and wife. They are also co-owners of the Los Angeles-based women’s soccer team Angel City FC. Their daughter who is only 5 years old, is also a co-owner of the club after her mother ensured she had a stake. All in all, it seems like Ohanian and Williams’ marriage has worked out well.
