Despite all this, she was strong and resilient; she only focused on her goals and did not let herself waiver from her goal. In an old interview, she talked about the influence of her second husband, downhill skier Andy Mill, in making her stay a bit longer on the court.

The choice of retiring before she could have been ousted by the young and more talented players seemed a feasible one for her.

Why did Chris Evert retire so early?

Chris Evert is one of the most legendary tennis players to ever grace the courts of tennis. However, she did not stay on it for too long; she retired at the age of 34. In an old interview, she talked about the time she had started to drift apart from tennis.

She had felt stagnant as she was not getting better and she did not want to retire in the end. She said, “I had that pride. I wasn’t going to retire ranked 100 and washed up and a real has-been.”

She did not want people to point fingers at her and say, “Why is she out there?” “Oh, for the money. Well, doesn’t she have enough?” However, meeting her second husband changed her perspective for some time. She said, “He helped me a lot. He had one fall, and he was gone. He was forced out of his profession.”

How did Andy Mill Convince her to stay in tennis?

Mill had to give up skiing because of his broken neck, back, and leg. Evert narrated the guidance that her second husband had given to her. He said to Evert, “Just stay in it as long as you can. A career is short-lived. Just try to find enjoyment.”

She followed his advice, but she did not like the inconsistency of the whole process. She summarized it by saying, “It was so up and down.” So, the player retired at the age of 34 holding a world ranking of world no. 4 at that point. Afterwards, Evert embraced her off-court life and was overjoyed to be around her family and sons.
