Coco Gauff on how she managed to beat Markéta Vondroušová in their bout

After many delays and the wind messing with the balls, we have our first semifinal qualifier from the Chetumal Group at the GNP Seguros WTA Finals. Gauff managed to beat the Wimbledon champion. After the match was over, Gauff discussed how she managed to overcome her opponent, even though the weather looked like it would cause constant problems.

Try not to get too frustrated, move your feet and pray that it goes in, to be honest. I had a lot of short balls, and then, you know, the wind moved the bounce, and she hit some great shots. Honestly, just a little bit of mental toughness and a little bit of praying and hoping that the ball would go in. Obviously, you guys helped me stay in this match. Thank you guys a lot; I know it’s been tough.”

The turbulent conditions of the bout

The bout between Gauff and Vondroušová was highly disrupted. The wind refused to let up, and the shots of both players became unpredictable for even grand slam champions. The swing was intense and even after the initial bounce, it was difficult to plan a return. Additionally, the clouds granted the match much rain and their bout was stopped multiple times.

Pictures and videos from and around the stadium were shared by fans and showed the dire scenes unfolding in Cancun. Many fans carried umbrellas and raincoats to ensure they stayed dry. Just in the first, the match was stopped twice. But despite all the stoppages, both players laid it all out on the court and the one who could manage better won.
