In sports, coaches are the most important aspect, followed by a knack for the sport. While coaches are sought after, there are some coaches who are left high and dry. Rennae Stubbs, former coach of Serena Williams, is one such coach. Even though she is a certified coach, the phone hasn’t rung even once with a query from an aspiring player. While one can speculate about the reason, Stubbs believes that prevalent sexism in Australia could be the reason.

Stubbs and Williams teamed up when the American player announced her last tournament. Stubbs coached Williams, and the Queen of the Court was eliminated in round three of the championship. While she played well, other players fought harder to advance. But after that role, Stubbs has not coached any other player.

Serena Williams’ former coach on lack of coaching opportunities

After her short stint with Williams, many would’ve expected that Stubbs would go on to coach more players. However, no such scenario has come up. Stubbs has taken up a role as a commentator and a sports analyst, but she has not received a call from another player to coach them. Stubbs believes that it is happening due to an age-old issue in Australia.

As per her, sexism plagues the country at large. She discussed the situation in an exclusive with Courier mail. She also said that there is massive merit in taking guidance from a female coach.

In the interview, she said, “I think there is a missed opportunity there from some players out there that could absolutely benefit from a female’s perspective,” Stubbs said. “There is no doubt I could step on a court with a male player and help him, and I would have no problems saying that to anyone.”

Additionally, she also said that there is little to no difference in coaching when it comes to the sex of the coach. “To me, there is no difference between a woman coaching a male than coaching a female because men are coaching women, so what’s the difference?”

She further talked about the understanding of a female coach over a male coach for a WTA player. “I think that women coaches are fantastic and I think they understand other women tennis players clearly better than the men.”

In the interview, she also said that Darren Cahill, former coach of stars like Andre Agassi and Simona Halep, told her that the phones would be buzzing for her. With her thoughts corroborated by a great coach, her statements might have some weight to them. What do you think about her situation? Tell us in the comments!
