“I think the difference with the Williams sisters with their power I mean, they could literally annihilate you with their power whereas, you know, with other players, I mean, you always feel like you got a chance, you know, you didn’t you didn’t have like 120 mile 125 miles an hour serves and returns coming at you,” de Swardt further shared.

A legacy defined by power

Mariaan de Swardt emphasized the point, stating, “They were physically so strong and powerful, and I think there was a little bit of an intimidation factor there too. You know, I mean, they were very athletic. They are very athletic, they’re strong.”

Their dominance wasn’t just about power; it was the fear they struck into the hearts of their opponents. Going up against the Williams sisters was a daunting task for any player. Their confidence and strength created an aura that said, “We’re here to win,” instilling doubt in their rivals’ minds.

As we celebrate 50 glorious years of WTA tennis and look back on the wild 90s era, the Williams sisters remain an indelible part of tennis history.
