In a stunning performance, Simona Halep outclassed the home favorite and current World number 2 Paula Badosa. The two-time major winner showed complete dominance and won the game in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Following the win, Halep advanced to round three of the Madrid Open.

Halep had her 2021 campaign hampered by injuries, which has led to a downward slide in her World rankings to No 21 in the world. Although, her ruthless game against Badosa was reminiscent of the level she played during the 64 weeks she spent at the top of the rankings. Halep will square off against 14th seed Coco Gauff in the third round. This will be the third meeting between the two players, with Halep leading the head-to-head 2-0.
