Serena Williams is an inspiration to the younger generation, especially for female athletes in the sporting world. She has paved the way for the younger generation to make a name for themselves. There are many players and coaches who have inspired others to reach where they are. Similarly, for Muguruza, it was the tennis legend Serena Williams who inspired her to fight for her dreams.

The former world number one played her last tournament earlier this month in front of her home crowd. She wanted to break the all time record of 24 grand slam titles, but her journey felt short in the third round. However, the 23-time Grand Slam champion has achieved more than a place in the list of all-time great tennis players. She has transformed women’s tennis over the years.

The 28-year-old tennis star has faced the younger Williams sister a few times on the court. She acknowledges her form and how players used to fear adapting against her. She wrote, “Serena took the game by storm and turned it into another type of sport, one that’s more aggressive, stronger, faster and more explosive. From that point on, players all had to adapt if they wanted to compete at her level, or at least close to it. For all these reasons, she’s the greatest of all time. There’s no doubt about it.”

Muguruza further explained how she used to prepare herself to play against the tennis star. She is one of those players who have learned a lot from Serena’s game and her playing techniques, before playing a match against the tennis star. She added, “All of us, including me, have studied her game in depth. I’ve watched a thousand videos, a thousand matches, a thousand explanations about her technique, her forehand, her backhand. That’s the only way to face the tennis player who has blazed a new trail.”

Muguruza played a few memorable matches against Williams

The 2016 French Open champion and the American legend have only played six matches against each other. She was quite fortunate to win a few against her. Their Wimbledon Final in 2015 was an iconic clash, a match that was dominated by Serena. The following year, Muguruza avenged her defeat and won against Serena in the 2016 French Open final.

Although they both dominated the tour in the past, this year’s US Open was not a great outing for either of them. Serena Williams couldn’t advance to the fourth round of the last tournament of her career, while the 28-year-old Spaniard lost in the initial stages of the tournament.
