‘Get More Matches’: Martina Navratilova Gives Valuable Feedback to Serena Williams

Serena Williams’ hunt to win the coveted 24th Grand Slam title has been going on over the past four years. Ever since defeating sister Venus Williams in the 2017 Australian Open final, she was expected to run past Margaret Court’s majors record and stand atop.
However, despite reaching four major finals since the 2017 Australian Open, Serena couldn’t go past opponents like Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka, and Bianca Andreescu. The youngsters from the WTA tour over the past two years have become so confident and secure in their game that Serena’s usual on-court dominance couldn’t scare them.

Last year, Serena stormed past others to reach the semis at the ‘happy slam’. But, she lost to eventual champion Naomi Osaka in the final four. Apart from the performance in Melbourne, Serena couldn’t make a lasting impact in any of the remaining three slams.

As the American pulled out of the 2022 Australian Open and is yet to reveal her comeback tournament, Martina Navratilova gave a few pointers to Serena to achieve success in Wimbledon and also at the US Open this year.

Serena managed to play very few matches last year on the WTA tour, focusing only on Grand Slams. That might change this year as the American intends to compete at the highest level in majors.
Navratilova believes Serena should add a couple of tournaments to her calendar

Coming to Navratilova’s take, she wanted Serena to add few more tournaments to her calendar and drew from her own experience to give advice to the 23-time major champion.

“You have to play matches before going on the grass, which requires different muscles. No matter what training I did, I was always more sore after playing a couple days on grass than any other surface. Wimbledon and the US Open are her best chance to win another major. She’s got a shot at those two. Condition the body and minimize the possibility of injury”.

As Martina mentioned, it is evident that US Open and Wimbledon are Serena’s best chances to win another major title. Whenever she feels fit to comeback, the American might want to add more tournaments in order to have a real shot at winning a Grand Slam.
