Serena Williams has finally stepped away from her beloved sport after 27 years. She played her last match in the third round of the US Open 2022. Despite ending her professional tennis career, the legendary American is not indecisive about what she wants to do next. She even mentioned her plans right after her last match.

That obviously included spending time with her beloved daughter Olympia, whom she considers her biggest achievement.

Serena Williams gets real about her after-retirement plans

Despite putting up a great fight against world no.46 Ajla Tomljanovic, Williams lost against the Croatian-Australian star. After the match, she was asked about her plans for the next day. Replying to the question, she said, “I’m definitely resting tomorrow, and then probably spending some time with my daughter.” She conveyed her willingness to be around her daughter and said, “I’m a super hands-on mom. I’ve been with her almost every single day of her life, minus two days or three days.”

She agreed on how her career had impacted Olympia. Williams stated, “It’s been really hard on her, my career. Do things that I never really have done or had an opportunity to do.” The player seemed optimistic about her retirement and said, “I have such a bright future ahead of me.”

Williams learned from COVID-19 and her year-long hiatus

Moving on, she talked about the lessons she had learned from COVID-19. She said, “Also, I’m kind of at an advantage because COVID happened.” It gave her the pre-requisite experience of how things are going to be. She said, “We kind of got to see what our lives would be like if we weren’t playing tennis.”

She also mentioned her hiatus of a year after her injury at 2021 Wimbledon. She said, “Then I got injured last year, so I took off literally a year. So I got to see, again, like, what every day would be like to wake up and not have to go to the gym.” Summing it all up in a jolly mood, she said, “I think I’m definitely probably going to be karaoke-ing tomorrow.”

All in all, the 23-time Grand Slam champion has set a legacy for the new generation of tennis players.
