‘Going to Knock It Down’ – Caroline Wozniacki Once Detailed How Serena Williams Relentlessly Pursued Her to Respond During a Personal Tragedy

Being one of the biggest names in tennis, Serena Williams has had numerous on-court rivalries. However, her rivalry with Caroline Wozniacki is often said to have topped the list. Over the years, the two have given the tennis world some of its most cherished matches. However, despite being arch rivals, the two made sure to not let their competitive spirit affect their friendship bond.

Going back in time, the year 2014 was a pleasant one for Wozniacki on the professional front. However, that wasn’t the case on her relationship front. Learning about the dark phase of her best friend, the person who came in as the shining light was none other than Serena Williams. A year later, in 2015, Wozniacki opened up about how Williams relentlessly pursued her during that time.

Caroline Wozniacki recalls the unconditional support of Serena Williams

In 2014, Wozniacki allegedly broke up her then-boyfriend, Irish golfer, Rory McIlroy on the verge of marriage. A year later, in 2015, during a conversation with a media house, Wozniacki recalled the time, admitting that it was Serena who helped her get over the dark phase. She started by asserting, “First she (Serena) texted, ‘If you don’t pick up, I am going to fly to Monaco.’ And then, ‘If you don’t answer the door, I am going to knock it down.’ So I thought, OK, I better answer the phone. And I am so glad I did.”

Today Serena enjoys the status of being happily married to the co-founder of Reddit, Alexis Ohanian. However, that wasn’t the case during the time of the interview. Instead, in 2015, being one of the most prominent players, Serena had been linked to numerous entities from different walks of life. Something that certainly became the reason for Serena’s wise advice to Wozniacki.

Going ahead in the conversation, Wozniacki admitted, “She wasn’t pitying me, like a lot of people were. I mean, it’s not like anyone died. I was in shock, but she was really helpful because she had been through it before.”

Some friendships start without a reason. However, with time, some incidents empower the bond in the most unexpected way. This incident became the empowering incident of the bond between Serena and Wozniacki. “She didn’t sugarcoat it, and she didn’t look down on me. She was really there for me when I needed her the most, and that’s why I think our friendship is so strong now,” Wozniacki ended.

The unpleasant separation of Wozniacki

Ruling over the tennis tour, Wozniacki started dating Irish golfer Rory McIlroy in 2011. Being together for two years, Wozniacki and McIlroy announced their engagement at the end of 2013. A few months later, the two further sent wedding invites to their friends and families. While things looked like a fairytale for the two, the dark time was yet to come. A few days after sending the invites, McIlroy came out in public to make the shocking announcement of calling off their relationship.

. That year, the Danish player won the Istanbul Open, and reached the finals of the US Open. Showing a decent performance, she ended the year as the World No. 8.
