Coco Gauff struck gold when she added Brad Gilbert to her team. The former coach of Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi has worked hard to make sure Gauff can succeed in the coming time. The veteran coach and former player has taken up the consultant role for the American teen sensation. Most recently, he revealed a piece of advice with which he provides tutelage while giving the example of Novak Djokovic.

Training a player who is struggling with their performance requires just the right touch. That is exactly what Gilbert brings to Coco Gauff. The young American sensation struggled quite a bit during the early months of this year. But the player is now back on her feet and is looking to demolish all competition in her path. However, Gilbert is not the only one who has a hand in improving Gauff’s level. Her main coach at the moment is Pere Riba, who ensures that Gauff can deliver with the shot-making and on-court performance as well.

Much of it is due to the guidance of her new coach and the consultation of Brad Gilbert. Agassi’s former coach is back in his field and talked about the most exciting aspect of coaching for him. I think for me, the thing that I missed most, by far, of anything—and you don’t realize it until you are back in the mix—is the simple art of scouting,” he said. “I feel like that is the strength in my coaching.”

Along with the information he shares from his scouting, Gilbert also pushed Gauff to embrace change while citing the example of the 23-time Grand Slam champion. Novak Djokovic is 36, and he’s still evolving,” he said. “If you watch him play, he’s volleying now better than ever. He’s serving bigger. Great players want to get better, and if you don’t think you can do better and work and improve your game, you don’t get better, and the people below you do.”

Gilbert’s advice comes from a certain perspective, which he gained over many years of coaching. This seems to be working for Gauff, as she has made considerable advancements ever since he joined her team. Not only does he provide her with essential tips, he also backs her up on the court.

Brad Gilbert backs Gauff during US Open Round 1 debacle

During her US Open Round 1 match against Laura Siegemund, Gauff was angered, a mood fans have not seen on the player’s face before. She was angry at her opponent as she was taking too long to serve even after points that did not last longer than 3 rallies. Eventually, Gauff started complaining to the chair umpire, who did nothing until the final set.

Gilbert was outraged as well and blasted the chair umpire on Twitter, calling only one violation incredulous. Although she was quite frustrated, Gauff won the match and advanced further. Gauff and Gilbert have developed a great bond as one can see from the way he came to her defense on his social media.
