The unfortunate demise of the renowned Olympian, Tori Bowie, has put a spotlight on the medical complications experienced by black mothers during childbirth. More than the complications, it has shined a light on the medical negligence that is prevalent across the US Healthcare system, particularly when it comes to women of color. From Serena Williams to Tori Bowie, even world-renowned black athletes have encountered a plethora of life-threatening health issues.

While the legendary American tennis player was fortunate to have survived, unfortunately, problems during labor led to the death of the 32-year-old American athlete. This has certainly made fans reminisce about the time they almost lost the 23-time Grand Slam winner to medical negligence.

Tori Bowie’s demise brought back memories of Serena Williams’ life-threatening episode

After the 32-year-old American Olympian passed away due to medical negligence, everyone in the world, whether it’s the tennis circuit or any other sporting arena, is talking about the health crisis that is prevailing in America. While people have been focusing on maternal health recently, including Serena’s husband Alexis Ohanian, the 23-time Grand Slam champion was a pioneer in this aspect. After enduring a difficult childbirth in 2017, she has openly talked about her life-threatening postnatal complications to create awareness among the public on numerous occasions.

In an interview with Elle last year, the former tennis legend talked about how even after giving birth successfully through a C-section, she faced complications.Due to the life-threatening complications, she had to go through multiple surgeries after Olympia’s birth in 2017.

She said, “I couldn’t breathe. I was coughing because I just couldn’t get enough air. I grabbed a towel, rolled it up, and put it over my incision. Sure enough, I was hacking so hard that my stitches burst. I went into my first surgery after the C-section to get restitched.”

Although one of the biggest sports stars came out in public to express concerns about medical negligence, nothing changed. It unfortunately resulted in Bowie’s demise, which came as a huge shock to the sporting world. Now athletes have come together to talk about the maternal complications and the subsequent negligence experienced by women of color in the US.
