‘Had to Go Hide..’ – Ukrainian Pro Dayana Yastremska Narrates Heartbreaking Series of Events at Home Leaving Deep Scars on Her

A lot of Ukrainian tennis players are serving hope amidst adversity. Starting from Elina Svitolina to Dayana Yastremska, they are trying to give their 100 percent just for their country. Recently, the 23-year-old tennis player opened up about the difficult situation that is still prevailing in her country amid the Russian-Ukraine war.

As the situation is still not under control, there are a lot of friends and family who are still stuck in the country. While Yastremska found her way into the tennis arena, there is a lot more to the story.

Amid the crisis in Ukraine, the 23-year-old tennis player is currently participating in the San Diego Open. However, after achieving a first-round victory against Caroline Dolehide, Dayana Yastremska opened up about her visit to her home country in the post-match press conference. Along with that, she also dwelled on the scary, heartbreaking situation of the country that exists. She stated, “Usually at 1 or 2 AM, they start massive drone attacks. Had to go hide in the parking lot at night 3x that week. Got very little rest.” 

After making it to the semi-final round of the Australian Open, she got an opportunity to visit her home country. The 23-year-old highlighted how she was able to get very little sleep as they would have to rush in the middle of the night just to save themselves from massive drone attacks that used to take place frequently.

But even after seeing the tough situation in Ukraine, she had to come back for her country and for her athletic dream. However, during the Australian Open, Yastremska also opened up about the emotional turmoil that comes with playing in such tournaments while her country is in the midst of war with Russia.

This year started off great for the Ukrainian tennis player, as she made it to the first semi-finals of the tournament in her career. After making it to the quarterfinals of the first Grand Slam event of the year, Dayana Yastremska opened up about how it’s emotionally challenging to play in such events while her country is facing so many problems.

She stated, “It’s tough emotionally to play, but the worst thing is you feel like you were already accepting this, what is happening. And people are starting to forget about what is going on … but I don’t really want to talk about it right now.” Along with that, the war has definitely affected people like her, as they cannot go home like they wanted when they wanted and can’t live like the old times.
