Richard Williams narrated a story from the time when boxing promoter Don King visited them in Compton.
When Don King met the Williams family
Back in the time when both Serena and Venus were yet to make their tour debut, their game attracted many eyeballs. A 10-year-old Venus Williams was already making a name for herself. Meanwhile, famous boxing promoter Don King paid a visit to the Williams family. He took them all to the Los Angeles Soul-food restaurant for lunch.
Over lunch, the Williams family decided that King will be the tour guide for Venus when she goes to New York to catch up with the end of the US Open. When a reporter asked Richard Williams if it was safe leaving his daughter with King, Richard gave a sarcastic reply. “People should be more concerned with what we’re trying to get from Mr. King. He’s the one with the millions,” Richard said.
It didn’t take Venus much longer after that to make her debut and rule the world. Later, Serena also followed her and the rest is history.
