It’s almost impossible to find a career as illustrious as that of Serena Williams. The 23-time major champion has numerous records to her name thereby strengthening her case for the greatest tennis player of all time. Well, great records are also followed by iconic or controversial moments and Serena pretty much has them in abundance. One such moment took place about 11 years ago at the London Olympics.

Serena Williams obliterated Maria Sharapova in the gold medal match of the 2012 Olympics that took place on Wimbledon courts. The Queen of the Court won her first gold in women’s singles to add to her three doubles gold medals. After creating history in London, Williams dropped a controversial celebration yet iconic celebration on the Centre Court.

Serena Williams’ controversial celebration at the Olympics

After registering a comprehensive 6-0, 6-1 victory over Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams was over the moon. She let out a loud shriek after securing the gold medal for her country and jumped around the court in elation. However, what happened next was arguably the highlight of the Games in 2012. Serena Williams hit the crip walk to celebrate her monumental achievement.

Later in an interview, Serena explained why she hit the C-walk. She said via the Daily Mail, “It was just me. I love to dance, I didn’t know what else to do. I was so happy, and next thing I know I started dancing and moving. I didn’t plan it. It just happened. When asked about the name of the dance, Serena added, “Actually, there is a name. But I don’t know if I — it’s inappropriate. It’s just a dance we do in California.

 

After the celebration, Serena Williams was hailed by the music artist who wrote a song based on the C-walk.

Serena Williams hailed by Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg or Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. is a known Serena Williams fan. However, his admiration for the former World 1 dates back to the early 2010s.  After Williams’ victory, the music artist congratulated her on her success and gave her a shoutout for hitting the iconic C-walk on the court.

He tweeted, “Shot out to Serena williams. C walking at the Olympics Cpt style hahahahah! Go girl.
