‘I Was Holding Back Tears’ – Venus Williams Says Getting Nominated for King Richard Is a Dream Come True

The Williams sisters have been one of the most successful siblings in the history of tennis. Not just on the court, Serena and Venus Williams have inspired people off the court too. While Venus initiated the dominance of the Williams sisters on the tennis circuit, Serena soon took over from her.

The younger Williams sister has gone on to win an incredible 23 Grand Slam singles titles. She is just a title away from equaling Margaret Court’s record of 24 major titles. On the other hand, the elder Williams sister has seven Grand Slam singles titles to her credit.

Their father, Richard Williams, played a pivotal role in the success of his daughters. Further, a biographic film named ‘King Richard’ was released, showcasing their father’s contribution to not just their careers, but personalities as well. Recently, Will Smith, who played the role of Richard Williams in the film, won the SAG Award for the ‘Best Male Actor’. Subsequently, the American actor honored the Williams family in an emotional speech.

Venus Williams reflects upon Will Smith’s SAG Award

The 41-year-old was in New York for the world premiere of The Batman. During an interview, she opened up about her friend, Will Smith’s emotional speech. She said, “I was holding back tears and it was just, you know, so special. Hopefully, we have more special moments but just to be nominated is already special, and then to have recognition is even better.”

Further, the interviewer jokingly said to her that she was just at the SAG Award ceremony and now here in New York and that she was literally all over the place. The interviewer asked Venus whether she had slept. Venus replied, “I know, I know. No, I haven’t slept all night. But, it’s all great. You know, these are all great experiences and that’s what life is about. Especially after COVID, we think we all want to experience this. So, I’m happy to be out here living my best life.”

Asked about the feelings if Will Smith would get the Oscar, Venus said, “Listen…I think I will be on a permanent party. IT’s a dream, right. And, when dreams come true, it’s incredible. So, it could happen. But, regardless, it’s an honor already, like, you’re sitting and waiting, like, let’s get nominated, when it happens, the party starts.”

‘King Richard’ has received six nominations at the 94th Academy Awards. The award ceremony will be held on March 27, 2022.
