Horrible Scenes in Cancun as Coco Gauff Struggles With Unforgiving Weather Conditions in a Battle Filled With Interruptions at WTA Finals

The weather conditions of the 2023 WTA Finals are abysmal due to the tropical climate of Cancun, Mexico, to say the least. The players have been facing difficulties day after day on the subpar court. However, the persistent rain and gusty winds in the city are too strong, adding to the challenges during the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Finals. Many players have expressed their dissatisfaction regarding the same. Coco Gauff faced the brunt of it as her match with Markéta Vondroušová was delayed because of worsening weather.

Before Gauff’s match was postponed, Jessica Pegula had talked about having to play in the windy conditions of the Mexican city. Despite practicing in a windy city herself, Pegula faced much trouble when she was playing matches. Now, her doubles partner is also facing the problems.

The absence of a roof on the newly constructed stadium has exposed the esteemed tournament to the whims of the unpredictable local weather. The third round of the 2023 WTA Finals started off with a bang as the US Open champion was set to face the Wimbledon champion. But, none of the two champions were able to showcase their abilities as their bout was stopped not long after it began.

As play was suspended after the score reached 5-4, many tennis fans took to the internet to share pictures and videos of the terrible windy weather at the WTA Finals in Cancun.

One fan shared a video of the grounds around the stadium, which were empty. It showed how everyone ran away due to the rain, and one could see many empty tables and chairs.

One tennis account shared the increasing problems troubling the two players in Cancun. A rain delay, crosswinds, headwinds, terrible bounces, and lowering skies following the chaotic weather in the Mexican city. 

A fan uploaded a video, which showcased the hard conditions under which the players were playing. The two players couldn’t even hit the ball properly as it kept moving because of the strong winds. Noticing the swing in the ball, it seemed as if someone was holding the ball with a string from the sky.

One picture showed fans holding umbrellas and wearing raincoats to deal with the rain. Even amidst the heavy rain, the DJ was there to make sure people could have some fun. 

The turbulent winds in Cancun caused a lot of disruption during the match and troubled the two players eventually halting the match. It has also caused a lot of inconvenience to other players throughout the WTA finals.

Jessica Pegula hopes for a delay

In Cancun, Pegula has attained victory after victory. Despite her dominance, she is not having a good time at the tennis tournament in Cancun. As she awaited her doubles match, the 29-year-old spoke with Tennis Channel. She stated in the interview that, Wouldn’t mind if it rained.

Although she trains in Florida, where the weather gets windy, often, the situation in Cancun was difficult for even her to handle. The weather and the court conditions are drawing much ire from the WTA players. Now, we have to see how the organization will respond to the claims of lackluster preparations.
