61-year-old Michael J. Fox became one of television’s most prominent actors in the 1980s. However, in the early 1990s, his acting career was derailed owing to a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis. Recently, American women’s tennis legend Chris Evert, an avid fan of the retired actor, took to Twitter and expressed what Fox’s indomitable fighting spirit means to her. The tweet came a few hours after Fox endured a fall during his public appearance at Philadelphia’s Fan Expo.

In her tweet, Evert paid tribute to some of Fox’s biggest strengths as a human being, which have allowed him to keep fighting Parkinson’s disease for so many years now.

Even though Michael J. Fox’s Parkison’s disease diagnosis dates back to 1991, he didn’t make it public until 1998. It came as a shock to the world of arts and entertainment, but it finally led to his fans understanding why his appearances across film and televisions had gone down since 1991. Following his diagnosis, Fox broke down and turned to alcohol to cope with his condition. However, after he realized that he was going down a slippery slope, he started abstaining from alcohol and eventually stopped altogether.

Following his successful recovery from the depths of alcohol addiction, Fox changed his approach to life. The result of his change in approach was the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Despite his worsening Parkinson’s symptoms, Fox continued to make public appearances and raise awareness about the disease. One of Fox’s landmark moments came in 2006, when he featured in a political campaign ad supportive of embryonic stem cell research. It propelled Fox to a whole new level of popularity, and his work began to draw more and more attention.

Evert’s tweet heaped praise on Fox’s “humility, his gratitude, and his resilience”. Evert also expressed how she looks up to Fox as “a hero” along with many others.

What Evert said about Fox starts to make even more sense once you consider what Fox said about a month back. At the time, Fox revealed that Parkinson’s disease was making it more difficult for him to live with each passing day. However, despite his worsening condition, Fox still doesn’t shy away from making public appearances. Even after tumbling on stage at Philadelphia’s Fan Expo, he sat through the entirety of the Back to the Future Q&A panel.

Evert can empathize more than most with Fox owing to her own battle against cancer

2022 started in the worst way possible for Chris Evert as she revealed an ovarian cancer diagnosis. At the time, Evert was working as a broadcaster and was all set to cover the 2022 Australian Open. Unfortunately, she had to work from home as she chose to undergo treatment immediately following her diagnosis.

The good thing for Evert was that her cancer was diagnosed quite early. As a result, her treatment allowed her to recover successfully. So, the fact that Evert can empathize with the debilitating disease that Michael J. Fox has had to fight since 1991 isn’t very surprising.
