How a Dose of ‘Waffles and Epiphanies’ Changed Serena Williams’ Husband Alexis Ohanian’s Career Path?

Epiphanies don’t come often, but when they do, they change lives. That’s exactly what happened to Serena Williams‘ husband Alexis Ohanian. The successful tech entrepreneur and investor was once a budding lawyer. However, there came a moment in his life when he was still a law student at the University of Virginia that hit him with the realization that a career in law just wasn’t meant for him. Instead, Ohanian decided to pursue entrepreneurship. Since then, remarkable things happened to him, and it’s fair to say that remarkable things are still happening to him.

The University of Virginia’s official Instagram page recently shared a post that featured Ohanian revealing where exactly his epiphany happened. It’s a place famed for its excellent waffles.

Alexis Ohanian was pursuing a degree in law at the University of Virginia. However, on a fateful day during his second year, everything changed. On that day, Ohanian the law student decided that becoming a lawyer was not going to make him happy. Instead, he decided to become Ohanian the entrepreneur, the person that the world knows him as today.

In the video, Ohanian said, “And I was here on the grounds during, I think it was my second year when I walked out of an LSAT that I was taking in order to get breakfast at Waffle House on 29”. He added, “That place is amazing for waffles and epiphanies”.

The video concluded with Ohanian saying “You see because while I was there in booth 19, I decided I probably shouldn’t be a lawyer if I walked out of the LSAT and instead, I should start a startup.

What did Ohanian do following his life-changing decision?

Despite his epiphany, Ohanian didn’t rush into any entrepreneurial venture. Instead, he decided to complete his graduation. After graduating, Ohanian pitched a concept to Y Combinator, which the tech startup accelerator rejected. However, this failure didn’t do much in terms of discouraging Ohanian.

Not long after Y Combinator’s rejection, Ohanian pitched another idea to the tech startup accelerator. This time, Y Combinator accepted the idea, and eventually, it went on to become Reddit, a company worth an estimated $10 billion today.
