There are some sports icons that we cannot forget, as they have become household names in the sport that is associated with them. Some names that immediately come to people’s minds are Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Michael Phelps. In an old interview with such icons, Serena Williams opened up about her individual game and how team sports would not have brought out the best in her.

Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, Warren Sapp, and Roy Jones Jr. were in an interview together. They discussed their lives and the sports that define them.
Serena Williams accepted to not being much of a team player
All the legends were in a room discussing what makes a player standout from the rest. Derek Jeter, the iconic baseball player, said, “I think if you look at all the people here, you rise to the occasion when your team or individual sport when you need to do it the most.”
To this, the interviewer asked if doing that is easier or harder in an individual sport. Replying to the question, the legendary basketball player, Michael Jordan, said, “I think it’s harder.” At the same time, the 23-time Grand Slam champion, who had not said much until then, jumped in and revealed, “I couldn’t play with teammates.”
Serena went ahead and gave her reasoning for the same. She said, “I am selfish and I couldn’t rely on anyone else. I couldn’t play with teammates.”
Serena Williams has reigned in the realm of tennis for more than 27 years and has built an astoundingly glorious career in tennis. She has become a source of inspiration for millions around the world. Would she have had the same impact if she built her career in team sports?

Serena left an unprecedented legacy behind
The legendary American player retired after playing her last match in the third round of the US Open. It is the same major tour where she won her first grand slam at the age of 17 in 1999. Though she could not equalize her record of grand slam titles with that of Margaret Court’s, her achievements in both singles and doubles will certainly place her in the pantheon of legends.
