Serena Williams shared a close bond with former coach

Recently, Macci spoke about the relationship he shared with the Williams family. From the moment he came across the sisters, he knew that he was seeing some special talent in front of his eyes.

Speaking on his relationship, Rick stated, “As I said, Richard is my best friend one of my best friends of all time, and had nothing to do with how good the girls were, or how good they are now because he was my best friend when they weren’t that good. Because I believed in Venus and Serena, and I saw what they had.”

When Macci saw Serena and Venus, he knew they were not ordinary kids and they had something spectacular to offer. There came a point when he literally became like a second father in their lives. He was involved at a crucial time in their careers and can take credit for shaping up their game to a great extent.

The 67-year-old added, “I never saw two little girls move like that. But there was rage, there was a rage inside these kids like I had never seen in my life. That’s why Richard and I had this unique friendship, because I became their second father, besides helping them remember, at this stage, from 11 to 15, that’s a crucial time in any child’s life.”
