American tennis star Serena Williams made a surprise return to tennis earlier this month. The 40-year-old was out for almost a year. Serena’s name was not even on the entry list for Wimbledon Championship 2022. However, the former world number 1 took a wildcard entry to the tournament.

Earlier she played in the Eastbourne doubles to prepare for the grass-court Grand Slam. However, her run in Eastbourne ended abruptly because of an unfortunate knee injury to Ons Jabeur.

With her focus fixed on Wimbledon now, the 40-year-old addressed the media persons in the pre-tournament press conference. Surprisingly, the very first question she got was about retirement.

Serena Williams on her plans for retirement

The opening question Serena received was about retirement. A journalist asked her if retirement was in her mind and the factors that made her decide to come back.

Serena said she never had retirement plans and it was her body that needed time to heal. “I didn’t retire, I just needed to heal physically and mentally, and I had no plans, to be honest,” she said.
