Serena Williams and Roger Federer’s retirements from tennis this year marked the beginning of the end of an era for the sport. However, Williams’ comments regarding a comeback after her retirement piqued the interest of tennis professionals and spectators alike. Angelique Kerber recently discussed her views on Serena Williams’ return to competitive tennis.

The American tennis player resigned from the sport earlier this year after dedicating a fruitful 20 years to it. She has won 23 Grand Slam titles and has several accomplishments to her name. The younger generation may now take the stage and make a stand for themselves, thanks to her.

Is Serena Williams making a return?

The German tennis player in a recent interview talked about the possibility of the 23-time Grand Slam champion, Williams making a comeback. She also talked about how it’s not easy to go back and forth from your own passion once you have grown from it.

When asked about her views on her returning to sports. She said, “Good question! Probably anything is possible. But I can understand how difficult it is to decide to stop with your passion, with what you love.”

She goes on to say that although the three-time grand slam champion won’t be affected by her comeback to the sport, everything is possible in terms of chances. The three-time Grand Slam champion further stated that an athlete’s life involves many difficult decisions, including this one.

Kerber said, “This is not easy to replace and probably the hardest decision in an athlete’s career, if you realize that you can no longer reach the top level, your body no longer participates like that and then comes the new generation. Serena played well in New York. I don’t know what’s going on in her, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she suddenly got back on the court.”

On the tennis court, the German tennis pro has faced the former world number one, several times. However, the 34-year-old tennis player clearly outperforms the 23-time Grand Slam champion in terms of major victory ratio. Four of those contests were championship matchups, in which both tennis players had an equal winning and losing percentage.

The 34-year-old defeated the former world number one and won her third Grand Slam major title in their most recent Wimbledon match, which took place in 2018.
