The American tennis legend, Serena Williams, bid adieu to tennis in the previous season’s US Open. It was the Croatian-Australian tennis player, Ajla Tomljanović, who spoiled the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s final dance in a jam-packed Arthur Ashe Stadium that was cheering for Serena. Tomljanovic recently opened up about her own assessment of their US Open clash.
The 29-year-old said that she didn’t really get a chance to talk to Williams after her victory. However, she added that she thought the former tennis ace didn’t really expect to lose that match. Here’s what Tomljanović said about her triumph over one of the greatest to step on the court.

The Australian tennis star was recently featured in an interview with Vogue Magazine in which she detailed her victory over Serena Williams on the eve of her farewell match. While talking to Jelena Dokic about her US Open antics, Tomljanović said that she felt strange initially after she was put against the American tennis legend. However, she was also glad as she got the opportunity to compete against “the greatest of all time” for the last time.

Later, the 29-year-old player was asked about her post-match interview, during which she gave a classy tribute to the ‘Queen of the Court’. Despite her remarkable win, Tomljanović gave the stage to Serena on that sad but celebratory occasion. Answering Dokic, she said that it felt strange because throughout the match her only focus was on winning against the tennis great. After finally clinching the match point, Tomljanović felt like celebrating the moment. However, her instincts wanted something else, as she didn’t really celebrate her underdog victory.

After that, the current world no.34 said that she wished she had more of a chance to talk to the former tennis ace. She wanted to say a few words to Williams directly, but then she realized it was her moment. The Aussie star added, “I don’t think she expected to lose. I think she believed till the last moment that she would win, not just this match, maybe the whole thing. But it was her night. Whether she won or lost and I just wanted that to be known.”
This is not the first time the Australian WTA star has spoken about her win over one of the greatest in the tennis realm. Even in the Netflix documentary, ‘Break Point,’ Tomljanović opened up about her underdog moment as she said nobody wanted her to win when she played against Serena.
