American tennis legend Serena Williams made a comeback to the tour after a gap of almost one year. The 40-year-old paired up with world number 3 Ons Jabeur to play in doubles at Eastbourne International. While there were doubts about her fitness, everyone was quite excited about her first game of the tournament.
However, the pair did not disappoint, as they won an entertaining match in three sets. Serena addressed the media after the match, where she answered various questions. Answering a question regarding her fitness, the American’s response left everyone in splits.

Serena’s funny take on her own fitness
Serena last played in Wimbledon 2021, where she retired mid-way because of an injured hamstring. However, it was so long that at a point in time, people started speculating about her retirement. Proving everyone wrong, the 40-year-old made a brilliant comeback. Yesterday, during the post-match press conference, she made a funny remark about her fitness.

“After I couldn't play New York I just went cold turkey of not working out, and it felt good. But I always try to stay semi-fit, because you never know when you're going to enter Wimbledon.”

Serena unsurprisingly looked rusty at the start of the match, and her strong-willed opponents won the first set. However, the experienced campaigner, along with her Tunisian partner, slowly gained momentum further in the game to win an entertaining encounter.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion has been absolutely phenomenal on every surface. Speaking of her record in Wimbledon, the American legend has won the grass-court Grand Slam seven times. She stands third in the list of most Wimbledon singles titles. Apart from that, the American has also won six doubles titles in the grass-court Grand Slam.
Now that Serena is returning after a 1-year gap, and given her age, her game is possibly not at the level it used to be, but a player of her caliber can surprise us any day.
