‘I Missed Her First Steps…’ – Serena Williams Highlights the Importance of Motherhood and Shares Parenting Tips

The 2017 Australian Open proved to be the last tournament for Serena Williams before entering motherhood. Before the tournament began, she found out about her pregnancy. Nonetheless, Serena went on to play in the tournament and emerged victorious, defeating her elder sister, Venus in the summit clash.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion gave birth to Olympia in September later that year. Now five years old, Olympia shares an adorable bond with her mother. Recently, Serena detailed some important aspects of motherhood.

Serena Williams has some advice for mothers

The American legend appeared on the ‘Black Girls Texting Podcast’ where she talked about why motherhood is important and the most important thing about being a mother. She said, “I think the most important thing about being mom is doing the best you can and understanding your situation.

Further, she added, “My situation is like I wasn’t able to be with Olympia sometimes because I had to try in and that broke my heart but I also spent a lot of time with her. So yeah I think it’s about understanding your situation and being kind to yourself because that would always be hard on myself and be like I miss this, I missed her first steps and turns out a lot of people miss their first steps.”

Talking about the most important thing while being a mother, Serena said, “You’ll eventually see them and um it’s just like but on the flip side I was there almost every single day for her and it’s just like okay well just be kind to yourself I think that’s the most important thing.

When did Serena return to tennis after becoming a mother?

The 23-time Grand Slam champion made a comeback at the Miami Open in 2018. After a 13-month break from tennis, Serena was up against Naomi Osaka in the first round of the tournament. It was the duo’s first meeting on the WTA Tour.

The Japanese star defeated Serena in straight sets as the latter made a losing return to tennis. Nonetheless, Serena worked hard and made it to the summit clash at the Wimbledon Championships. She lost the finals against Angelique Kerber.

She also reached the US Open final that year. However, her summit clash against Osaka was an ill-fated match. Serena had numerous altercations with the chair umpire and she eventually lost the match in straight sets.
