‘I Remember Being Very Very Sad’- Caroline Wozniacki Recalls Her Worst Memory From Australian Open

2018 Australian Open winner Caroline Wozniacki was driving down memory lane during a recent interview with Eurosport and she talked about some of the memorable matches she has had in the Australian Slam. One of her worst-ever matches was against the 9th seed Chinese sensation Li Na during the 2011 Australian Open.

Caroline, who was the top seeded player in the 2011 Australian Open, said, “This was the match I had match points in the semi-finals against Li Na. And I ended up losing the match. So that’s one of those matches I have tried to leave far behind me because I remember being very very sad after this match.”


Caroline was devastated after the semi-final loss. The Dane said that she did everything right in that match and played really well, as did her opponent. At one point, she was at “5-4, 40-30, serving for the match” but couldn’t finish the encounter off.

The now-retired tennis star said, “It was really a tough loss for me. It’s one I don’t like looking back at.” The day after the match, Caroline remembered practicing for three hours because of the way she felt about losing to Li Na. The loss encouraged her to do better, and she went on to win in Doha, Dubai, and Indian Wells Championships.

The Danish star played well in 2010 and entered the Australian Open 2011 as the top seed. She was pumped up and reached the quarterfinals with ease. It was the quarters match that showcased her determination and top-seed-worthy performance.

Caroline was one set and a break down in the match. Many already had questioned her ability to win a Grand Slam. But Caroline Wozniacki fought hard against Francesca Schiavone and made to the semis 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In the semi, she faced Li Na who was the 9th seed in the tournament and was looking to reach her first Grand Slam final. The Chinese player was in her second straight Australian Open semi-final, while Caroline was playing her first semi Down Under.

Fate turned against the Danish star when she was a set and a break up against Li Na. 5-4 and 40-30 was the score where she was serving for the match point. But Li Na Broke her serve with a forehand winner and won the set 7-5. Then she claimed 3rd set 6-3 and made it into the finals.
