“I Started To Scream” – Ukrainian Tennis Player Dayana Yastremska Recalls Harrowing Experience Before Fleeing Country

The current geopolitical situation in the world is not steady as tensions are rising every day and things have been difficult for the citizens of Ukraine. Ukraine has quite a few players on both the ATP and WTA tours as they are in a difficult position to concentrate on tennis while constantly worrying about their family.  One such youngster is Dayana Yastremska, who left Ukraine under adverse circumstances.

Dayana Yastremska recalls a traumatic incident

“I think you’re going to be able to leave so we went with my sister to the shop to buy food for my dog and we are working, everything is normal. Then we are coming back to apartment and we are talking everything is fine and then not too far not too close, there was a bomb” she said in the “No Challenges Remaining” podcast hosted by Ben Rothenberg.

Yastremska had a career-high ranking of 21. She recently opened up about how while in Ukraine, a bomb went off near to where they were, and as a result, they had to go into hiding for some time. She said that they were planning to leave the country and had gone to the shops to prepare for the same.

“Yeah, I straightaway call my father I started to scream that there was a bomb close by we’re running back to the home, back to apartment. So we are going to the apartment and in the news it says that take a safe place underground or parking or you know places where you can, in the underground. So we dressed very fast and we went with all family in the parking waiting.”

It was after this that her parents took the decision to ensure that their two daughters would be able to leave the country. They made necessary arrangements for Dayana and her sister.They were ultimately able to leave France via Romania, where Yastremska was slated to participate in the Lyon Open.
