The dynamic rapper sent a congratulatory message to a close rival of Serena Williams
Drake has a history of cheering for Canadian athletes in varied sports. However, given that he is a self-described Serena Williams fan and may have been her ex-boyfriend, the Canadian rapper felt conflicted about Andreescu’s victory. Drake’s omission was first brought up by Andreescu when she once made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2019.
Andreescu had defeated Serena Williams to become the first Canadian woman to win a Grand Slam singles title. She had heard from almost everyone in Canada, including basketball legend Steve Nash and prime minister Justin Trudeau. However, she felt disappointed that she still hadn’t heard from Drake. After keeping quiet for four days following the big game, Drake finally texted her. During a press conference, Andreescu read aloud the text she had received from him.
