Naomi Osaka, the Sportswomen of the Year

The four-time Grand Slam champion achieved a new milestone to add to her ever-growing resume by winning a BET award. The BET honors the best and most successful athlete of the previous year with the sportswoman of the year award. And for the year 2021, they chose Osaka.

Osaka outperformed Serena Williams, the woman who holds the record of maximum wins in this category. After receiving the award, Osaka shared her happiness with her fans on Instagram and wrote, “look what finally came. Ngl, this is really cool. I used to watch this every year with my mom and sis.”

Naomi Osaka has been nominated twice before in the years 2019 and 2020 for the award. However, owing to her third Grand Slam title in 2021, she finally claimed the trophy.

Awards Osaka Has Bagged Over the Years

Like every other player, Osaka faced problems due to the pandemic. She even restricted her participation to only 4 grand slam tournaments in 2019. Even so, she achieved some outstanding records in that year. Owing to her strong mindset, she won her first Australian Open and claimed the ranking of world no.1. As a result of which, she received the Laureus World Sports Award for breakthrough of the year.

Later, in the year 2020, she was chosen as the Associated Press female athlete of the year by a panel of AP sports editors for her active involvement in a protest against racial injustice and police brutality.
