Ons Jabeur has battled past Bianca Andreescu in a tight three-setter here at the Wimbledon Championships on Saturday. The result could have gone either way but the more experienced Jabeur managed to hold her nerve in the end and won the match. It was Jabeur’s first match on the center court since last year’s final. Jabeur wasn’t at her best but still managed to deliver the goods.

It was a disappointing end to Andreescu’s tale this Wimbledon. 79-year-old legendary American tennis player Billie Jean King was watching from the stands and that gave a big boost to Jabeur to beat Andreescu in the end.

Ons Jabeur’s wit and sense of humor

Ons Jabeur, the star player from Tunisia, is very witty. Many players also consider her one of the nicest players around. After winning the match, in the on-court interview, Jabeur said that the sheer amount of drop-shots and slices from her opponent was annoying. She said that now she knows how others would have felt playing against her.

She went on to say that she was going to ask for some help from Billie Jean King. Jean King stood in acknowledgement and the crowd went wild. And Jabeur said in jest that she must talk to Jean King afterward.

Jabeur is one of those players who makes the people around her laugh uncontrollably. And that is why maybe she is appropriately nicknamed ‘the minister of happiness’.

In the Round of 16, Jabeur now faces two-time Wimbledon champion and former world no.1 Petra Kvitova. That would be a serious test of Jabeur’s character and mettle.

Jabeur and Billie Jean King’s relationship

Even before this, Billie Jean King and Ons Jabeur have always enjoyed a great relationship. When Jabeur broke into the top 10 for the first time in October 2021, it was Billie Jean King who spoke of her in such an endearing manner.

Jean King had said: “I think we need to use our sport as a platform to do good and I think she is, and I love that. I love the fact she?s so proud of being Arab, and she?s representing Arabs; she wants to make a difference for women?s tennis as well.

She also said Jabeur can reach the ranking of world no.1 some day and that she is going in the right direction for that.

Jabeur is surely one of the favorites to win the Wimbledon championships this time. But she has to be careful while playing Petra Kvitova in the next round. By all accounts, this is going to be a crucial match for her.
