Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian’s reflections on Twitter’s transformation
“Rest in peace, Twitter bird,” Ohanian began, his words echoing the collective sentiment of many who mourned the iconic avian logo that had adorned Twitter for years.
Ohanian bid goodbye to the iconic Twitter bird, echoing the feelings of many who were attached to the old logo. “As a guy who created the Reddit mascot,” he continued, “I was sad. That little blue bird was pretty iconic.” Ohanian said, acknowledging the attachment people have to symbols. He recognized that Elon Musk’s plans for Twitter, now known as “X”, go beyond just a social media platform.
Ohanian compared this to Facebook’s transformation into Meta and noted that while Meta signaled a drastic shift, “X” still holds onto the essence of Twitter. People are still using and talking about “Twitter” and “Tweeting”, and Ohanian believes the new name might eventually catch on too.

However, Ohanian’s perspective was nuanced. He acknowledged that Elon Musk’s vision for Twitter, now “X”, stretches beyond the confines of social media.
He contrasted this with Facebook’s transition to Meta, highlighting that while the latter’s change was driven by a radical shift in direction, Twitter’s essence still resonates with users. “People are still using ‘Twitter,’ and they’re saying ‘Twitter’,” Ohanian noted, emphasizing the familiarity of the term “Tweeting” and its potential resilience against the new name, “X”.
Ohanian’s wisdom for tech innovators
Drawing from his own experience with Reddit, Ohanian shared stories from its early days. He remembered designing Reddit’s mascot, “snoo”, back in college, despite facing doubts and negativity. Even the name “Reddit” wasn’t well-received by everyone, with some thinking it could harm the company’s future.
