‘I Was Selling Donuts’- Serena Williams Says She Was a Businesswoman From Her School Days

Serena Williams, the 23 times Grand Slam champion has inspired many. She is an icon to not only tennis aspirants and fans but to also those who are hustling to make it big in their lives. This makes sense as Williams touched the peak by rising from the bare minimum.

However, except for the tennis part, she was always a normal child. A child who, slowly with age and the understanding of the world, built herself. With that being said, here’s one of the most innocent stories from her childhood.

Williams currently is one of the wisest investors and runs a multi-million dollar company, especially dedicated to the purpose. But one may wonder how she got the idea of such ventures when her entire life panned around tennis. Well, the answer is simple, the former World no.1 was always inclined towards business. In fact, she found a way to earn money back in school. As Williams disclosed, “I was in fourth grade and I was selling donuts.”

“We would buy them for like 9 cents and we would sell them at school for a quarter each. So we would hopefully make a profit and then we would go buy some more.” She added.

Though sometimes young Serena got distracted by the most appealing thing to a kid. “I spent all my money in the ice cream truck,” The tennis ace chuckled and said.

Further, Williams has made investments in over 60 startups and recently raised a humongous sum of 111 millions dollars through Serena ventures.

Williams comeback

The 40-year-old, after advancing in the business sector by using her time off the court, made a comeback in the grass swing. She took part in the doubles of the WTA 500 event at Eastbourne. There alongside the world no.2 Ons Jabeur, she made a decent quarterfinal run and geared up for the Grand Slam.

However, in the Wimbledon Championships, the seven times champion couldn’t prove her prowess and had to pack her bags in the opening round. In a three set long match, she merely acted as a stepping stone to the French young blood Harmony Tan. Further along with the title, she lost her protected ranking and got pushed out of the WTA rankings for the first time in 25 years.
