‘I Wasn’t Happy’- Past Hostilities Recalled by Ajla Tomljanovic Ahead of Australian Open Encounter Against Jelena Ostapenko

Tennis is a sport that is not usually known for fights. However, some on-court rivalries turn into long-lasting feuds. Ajla Tomljanovic and Jelena Ostapenko are two players who had a rather public drama. The two players had a fiery exchange of words in their 2021 Wimbledon bout, and since then, their matches have been filled with drama.

 As they are set to face each other again in the Australian Open, the native player Tomljanovic addressed their controversy.

Both Tomljanovic and Ostapenko have come into the 2024 Australian Open intending to go far. As the two won their first-round bouts, they will now face each other in the second round. Tomljanovic won her match recently and sat down with the press to discuss her upcoming bout. As per her, there is no drama between the two anymore.

No. I mean, no. I really don’t think so. What happened happened. It’s been a while. I think we played each other once more, and she beat me. Look, I have respect for her as a player. What happened was just at that moment. I just reacted,” Tomljanovic said after being asked about having any bad blood with Ostapenko.

Expressing her feelings from the past, Tomljanovic soon closed the chapter of their prolonged fight. She said, “We never spoke about it. Yeah, we’re both going to be competitive. That’s for sure. I do think at least from my side I respect her as a tennis player, yeah. In that moment, I wasn’t happy. Oh, this answer’s going way too long (laughter). It’s fine. It will be a good match.”

As the feud between Tomljanovic and Ostapenko is most likely going to end, here is a glimpse at the beginning of their infamous fight.

In round 3 of the 2021 Wimbledon, Tomljanovic managed to emerge superior to her opponent, who was ranked much higher than her. The Latvian and the Australian players went up to shake hands at the net when the situation heated up further. Ostapenko said, “You’re the one to talk!”. Tomljanovic replied, “You have zero respect, yes?
