Every earning individual has to pay their dues. It’s just a part of adulthood and athletes are no different from those who hold a corporate job in this regard. 19-year-old Coco Gauff was recently made aware of the amount of taxes she pays and the amount left her surprised, causing her to ruminate on the same. Adulthood is never easy, is it?

With an estimated net worth of $12 million, the 2023 US Open champ is among the highest-paid athletes in the world. While it may be an enviable position to many, just like the rest of us,  Gauff doesn’t like the amount of tax she pays at the moment.

“I’ve always been aware that I had to pay taxes even when I was a minor but I guess now I’m more aware of how much money is going to the government, and it’s a lot, so I would say that part, being aware of it, is something I’m not enjoying,” Gauff tells The National with a laugh she sat down with them at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Monday.

“I’ve been paying taxes since I’ve been making money. But just now, when I turned 19, my dad has made me more aware of how much I’m paying and how everything works with that world. I wish I could go back to not knowing how much is going away.”

Coco Gauff is not alone in disliking a large amount of her pay being cut for taxes, but unlike her, some choose the easy way to evade them. Every country does it differently and those who are able choose to move from their home country to Monaco, which is considered a tax haven for anyone. The principality of the country does not levy income taxes and taxes on net wealth, hence making it a haven for all top athletes.

Gauff has not shared any plans of moving to another country, but the disdain for taxes has developed in her mind. She has a personality that does not repress her dislike for something, which means that we will likely see more jokes about taxes from her in the future.
