Coco Gauff has been hailed as one of the brightest prospects in tennis for quite some time now. Her remarkable victory over Venus Williams back in the 2019 Wimbledon Championships saw her become an overnight sensation in tennis. After reaching her first slam final at last year’s Roland Garros, the American entered the top 10 for the first time. However, things haven’t been as bright for the 19-year-old of late. However, she still has the backing of several renowned names in tennis. In a recent podcast appearance, renowned tennis pundit and commentator, Robbie Koenig, pointed out two things that should be worked on by the American star.

After her round one exit at Wimbledon, Gauff’s limitations have been questioned. Despite breaking into the top 10 last year, the American prodigy has failed to make any improvement in rankings. Her form has forced the experts to analyse the major shortcomings in her game.

Where could Coco Gauff improve?

Serve, forehand and movement are considered to be three of the most important elements in the sport. While Gauff excels in two of those, she has a serious shortcoming in the other. Her forehand is often criticized and recently the iconic tennis commentator Robbie Koenig has weighed in on it.

The South African said, during his appearance in the Tennis Channel Inside-In podcast, “I think if Coco can just do those two things. Just fine-tune the size of the swing, keep it a lot more compact, she’s got the power. If you could just add a bit more control to it. I think there would go a big way to helping and then her mindset of being ultra positive with that shot.

Koenig believes that Gauff has much more potential than what she has shown so far. She also has age on her side, along with experience. At just 19 years of age, she has played over 220 singles matches! With proper guidance and effort, she can fulfil her potential. However, Gauff also has to overcome a major challenge if she is to win a major.

The Iga Swiatek challenge for Coco Gauff

Gauff has somewhat developed a forgettable record against Iga Swiatek. She has faced her seven times and lost in straight sets every time. In fact, Swiatek has been the one to stop her in the last two editions of the Roland Garros. With clay being the best surface of both these players, Gauff has to figure this matchup out quickly as Swiatek looks relentless on this surface.
