‘If She Hadn’t Been in My Way’ – Serena Williams’ Close Friend Caroline Wozniacki Says She Could Have Won More Grand Slams if Serena Didn’t Play During Her Career

Caroline Wozniacki, the retired Danish tennis ace, recently shared her views on friend and former on-court rival, Serena Williams. According to Wozniacki, Williams is the greatest tennis player in history. While praising the American’s endeavors both on and off the court, the Danish star mentioned how she had enjoyed very little success against Williams on the Tour.


Wozniacki admitted that the tennis legend will not be making a comeback anytime soon. Her claims broke the hearts of many fans. The Danish player claimed it would be lucky to even catch a glimpse of Williams playing an exhibition match.

The friends competed against each other 11 times on tour. However, Caroline Wozniacki won only one match, at the 2012 Miami Masters. She admitted that it was difficult to comprehend Serena Williams’ greatness from the other side of the net. In an exclusive interview with the Tennis Channel, Wozniacki said,(Serena) she beat me way too many times. No, but I think uh the fact that you know she’s just such a great person.” She went on to say that Williams is, in her opinion, the greatest tennis player of all time.

Wozniacki claimed that Williams pushed her, and the other women to play better and improve their skills. She also mentioned that Williams was very thoughtful off the court. The Danish tennis star explained how the 23-time Grand Slam Champion has given back both on and off the court. Williams, according to Wozniacki, is very special, and playing against each other was difficult.

Wozniacki further added, “there’s a lot of tournaments that I feel like I could have probably won, Grand Slams I could’ve won if she hadn’t been in my way. But at the same time what an honor to be there at the same time as her because I really got to play against, again, the best player to play this game.”

Williams once defended her best friend’s controversial actions

The Danish tennis player was chastised after stuffing towels down her top and skirt to look like Williams during an exhibition match against Maria Sharpova. Some sports analysts thought the joke was hilarious. However, many African-American fans and pundits thought Wozniacki was essentially making fun of African-American women’s bodies and thought it be a racist gesture.

However, in an email, the American star claimed that Wozniacki had no bad intentions. Serena Williams clarified that she had not seen the widely circulated video clip. Williams stated that in these situations, she would prefer to avoid conflict and this controversial incident didn’t affect her friendship with Wozniacki.
