Iga Swiatek has been on a dream run so far in 2022, winning three back-to-back WTA 1000 events. The 20-year-old won her first title of the year at the Qatar Open in Doha. She followed her win in Doha with back-to-back titles in Indian Wells and Miami. On Saturday, Swiatek breezed past Noami Osaka in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 to claim her fourth Masters 1000 title of her career.

Apart from being on a 17-0-win streak, Swiatek has also written her name in history books. Winning the Indian Wells and the Miami Open, Swiatek becomes the 4th woman in history to win the Sunshine Doubles.  In the process, she also becomes the first woman to win the first three Masters 1000 events of the year.

However, following her triumph in Miami, Swiatek made an announcement. After having a breakthrough performance at the North-American hard court swing, Iga Swiatek has withdrawn from the Charleston Open. The decision comes in following a harmless arm injury the new World No. 1 has suffered. The decision to withdraw from the Charleston Open came after her title match in Miami yesterday.

Announcing her withdrawal, Swiatek said, “I’m very sorry to withdraw from Charleston but after a marathon of three tournaments where I played in the finals, I’ve got a harmless injury of my arm that I need to rest,” Swiatek said. “I hoped to start the clay season in Charleston there but unfortunately, I need to wait to play this great tournament with big traditions. So hopefully, see you there in the future.”

Iga Swiatek has an impeccable record on the red dirt and enjoys playing on the surface. She rose to prominence when she beat Sofia Kenin in the final to win her maiden Major at the French Open in 2020 just at the age of 19. She did not drop a set en route to her title run in Paris. The Pole also has a Masters 1000 title on clay, winning Rome Masters last year. However, she wasn’t able to defend her title at Roland Garros in 2021, losing to Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinals.

Following a trio of Masters 1000, Swiatek should be high on confidence and certainly starts as one of the strong contenders to win the French Open at the end of the clay-court swing. Considering the harmless nature of her arm injury, one can expect Swiatek to return to action soon on clay.
