The world’s number-one tennis star Iga Swiatek revealed her opinion about heavy social media usage and its impact on performances. Swiatek previously surprised her fans by saying she has limited her social media usage before tournaments. Swiatek revealed that social media during tournaments can impact athletes’ mental health.

Iga Swiatek confirms not using social media during championships, says “it can distract”
In a recent press conference, Swiatek opened up about her reasons not to be very frequent on social media platforms. Swiatek commented- ““I would say I’m doing good job, like, separating that. I dont use really social media during the tournaments. I just post my stuff and that’s all. For sure, when I go on social media when I’m not playing tournaments, yeah, it can distract a person. I would say also when you start making successes, having successes, it’s easy to focus on the business part of the sport and forget what you are actually here to do, the work that you should put.”

Switek recalled her debut Roland Garros moment and explained how social media impacted her practice. Swiatek further continued- “I remember after I won my first Roland Garros, like two months I really was going the wrong path. The practices weren’t a priority in my schedule, in my head, you know? I remember my team had to kind of push me right back on the right path.”

Swiatek agrees with the fact that social media is harmful. She concluded by saying- “I think, yeah, social media and Internet can distract you, and this business side of sport, if you don’t balance it well.”
Swiatek previously also opened up about limiting social media interactions while attending tournaments. Swiatek said- “Generally, I limit social media at tournaments, I often have a period after the competition that I make up for it. However, recently I don’t do it, because I had a few tournaments after which I was happy, and I lost in the final and there was a lot of hate and it wasn’t nice.”

Iga Swiatek’s statement revealed that social media impacts the minds of popular athletes just like the rest of us. The hate messages from the fans after a dissatisfactory performance can impact any WTA player.
