‘I’m Crying’ – A Spirited Martina Navratilova Was Once Forced to Accept Defeat in Her Quest to Conquer Mt. Kilimanjaro

American tennis star, Martina Navratilova’s s life was full of challenges. She fought for various social rights and is one of the prominent faces of the LGBTQ community. Back, in 2010, Navratilova announced her treatment for breast cancer. After going through the treatment, the brave athlete decided to climb the highest peak of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro.

The 18-time Grand Slam champion took the challenge to raise awareness for Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.

Less than two months after her radiation treatment for breast cancer, she took up the challenge. However, she had to return in between because of breathing issues she started facing due to the high altitude. Later, after getting out of the hospital, the 18-time Grand Slam champion spoke to the media. “Everything is taking a monumental effort. Going to the bathroom, getting dressed, setting up the tent. I don’t want to ever . . .”

She paused to explain she couldn’t make out the next words. Then she picked up when it became legible. “I’m crying. That’s when I stopped writing. At that point, I knew there was no way I was going to make it to the top.”

Further, she added, “I’ve always said, ‘The only failure is when you fail to try. The other failure would be not giving your best effort. And I feel I did both: I tried and gave my very best effort. It just wasn’t meant to be.”

Showing such courage after her battle with the deadly disease is truly commendable. The fighting spirit and dedication she showed is an inspiration for future generations.

Roger Federer, Venus, and Serena Williams are all above 40 now. Tennis is a game that is highly demanding physically and with the age, the reflexes of players get slowed down. There are many who would advise these legends to retire honorably, rather than spoiling the records they have earned in their prime. However, the 65-year-old legend has a distinct suggestion for them.

“For your own good, forget whatever it may do for or against your brand. I wouldn’t announce it until that’s it,” she said.
