Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s career is one of the most illustrious ones in tennis. She ruled the courts for years and has made records that will take decades to break. However, it goes without saying it wasn’t an easy journey. She faced her fair share of hardships, but unlike many, she used them to power through her career.

Also, in a competitive sport like tennis, change is constant, and to avoid that, one has to keep up with newcomers and new tactics. Something which Williams did frequently to safeguard her crown. Here’s how she explained the same. 

When Serena Williams shared a secret about her style of play

Williams, during a 2017 interview with Vogue, shared how she learns about the areas in which she was lacking and the factors that make her venerable on the court. Moreover, she also spoke about how she thwarted the challenge of every  newcomer, right from Maria Sharapova to Caroline Wozniacki. She said, “I learn by watching.”

“I’m like the Parasite.” Thereafter making a DC comic reference, she added. “He’s a leech. He takes all your energy with him. Or I watch old matches of myself on the Tennis Channel. I hit amazing shots, and these girls are running them down and hitting winners, and I’m beginning to see why. It’s because I have patterns.”

“I don’t want to say more than that. I don’t want these girls to read this article and get a leg up,” the former World no.1, after breaking into a fit of laughter, explained. Williams was on a pregnancy break during this interview. She had to end her professional year early. But even so, she made it fruitful by winning the Australian Open.

She welcomed her firstborn, who now is five years old in September 2017 with fiancé Alexis Ohanian and then in the next month tied the knot with him. Further, she made a comeback in the circuit next season in March through Indian Wells.

Williams recently marked the end of an era

The seven-time Wimbledon champion, after recovering from a gruesome leg injury, rejoined the WTA Tour. However, because of a year’s gap, she lost her grip and faced defeat in the very first singles match she played. Following that, she evaluated her future and decided to pursue Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Grand Slam victories for the last time.

She enrolled for the US Open and announced her retirement. Although the 41-year-old, who has claimed over 100 victories in the hard courts of Flushing Meadows, failed to touch Court’s milestone, she for sure safeguarded her legacy as the best player the sport has seen.
