Indian Wells: American WTA Star Harks Back to Nostalgic Juan Martin del Potro Memory at the Desert

Apart from her on-court prowess, one thing that Katie Volynets expressed in her 2024 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells was her admiration for one of tennis’s beloved figures, Juan Martín del Potro. With her remarkable matches, the rising WTA player has been causing quite a stir in the tennis community.

Volynets has defeated 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva in her latest match at Indian Wells. As she progresses towards her next round, she reminisces about her endearing relationship with Juan Martín del Potro, whom she saw playing at the Indian Wells when she visited with her parents as a kid.

Growing up, Katie Volynets was a huge fan of the Argentinian player and clearly remembers a fortuitous meeting she had with del Potro when she and her parents went to Indian Wells during her childhood. She fondly recalls the autograph from her idol that she would remember her whole life. “My parents took me here since probably I was 6, and we went with my brother. Every year, I was running after autographs. I remember del Potro one time was like last autograph and I was there and he saw me and signed my autograph and I will remember that forever,” Volynets disclosed in a post-match interview after her win at the Indian Wells.

The same tennis courts where Volynets formerly supported her idols are now where she finds herself in the present with a racket in hand. Katie Volynets is now through to the second round of the Indian Wells and is due to play Tunisian sensation Ons Jabeur in her next match. In a conversation about her tremendous growth over the years in tennis, Volynets said, “I don’t think I imagined I would be here when I was 6 or 7 years old, chasing after other pro athletes.”

As the tennis prodigy moves forward with her tennis endeavors, Volynets’ performance at Indian Wells is a testament to her unbelievable talent.
