

The Indian Wells Masters has been alight with appearances of several celebrities. They have been joined by several tennis veterans throughout the last few days. Most recently, we saw none other than the nine-time grand slam champion Monica Seles at the Open, watching the first semifinal of the women’s division of the BNP Paribas Open.
As fans saw the former player in the stands, they had mixed reactions. However, almost all agreed that she was an iconic star who made Iga Swiatek’s and Marta Kostyuk’s matches even better.

Monica Seles watches Iga Swiatek play against Marta Kostyuk
The first WTA semifinal of the Indian Wells took place between Iga Swiatek and Marta Kostyuk. Swiatek gained an immediate lead against the Ukrainian star, which is when Seles came into the frame. As the scoreboard read 3-1, 15-0, the camera panned over to the American-Hungarian player and the former rival of Steffi Graf.

The Tennis Letter shared a video when Seles came in the frame with the caption, “Monica Seles is in the house to watch Iga Swiatek & Marta Kostyuk. One of the most iconic players women’s tennis has ever seen. 👸” The page is right about Seles being an iconic tennis player, as she had managed to win six of her nine grand slam titles before she turned 20.
Seles was one on her way to becoming one of the best players in the world and possibly the history of the sport before she was unfortunately stabbed. Regardless, the former player has put a smile on the faces of her fans many times during her prime. However, has wanted to play in another era.

Seles regrets not playing with the Serbinator
Yugoslavia was dissolved as a country in 1992, and the hometown of Seles has now become a part of Serbia. The former player’s country brought about Novak Djokovic, the most accomplished tennis player in history. She said in a recent interview that she had stopped counting Djokovic’s slam wins after he had won so many.
She further said, “I just wish that we played in the same era as it would of been so cool to play mixed doubles together. For me it would be a Masterclass.” Her wish to play the sport with one of its greats might evoke a pang in the hearts of many.

Her attendance in Indian Wells comes as a surprise as she has not been seen in the stands often. Although she has a traumatic past, she still has a love for the sport, which drove her to the Indian Wells.
