Despite having an exceptional start to the season, Danielle Collins is not free from the struggles of being a professional athlete. Collins has been dealing with two chronic inflammatory conditions: rheumatoid arthritis and endometriosis. And juggling her career with her professional world has been anything but “easy” for her. Collins admitted to her initial reaction to the diagnosis during a candid interview, shedding light on the mental and physical toll the diseases took on her.

After writhing in pain for years, Collins was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2019. The American tennis star has since adjusted her diet, exercise regimen, and way of life significantly to manage the condition. But that was not the end. In 2021, she underwent an emergency surgery for endometriosis. However, Collins managed to heal from it and came back stronger and better. Referring to such difficulties, she said, “Balancing two chronic inflammatory conditions when you are a professional athlete is not an easy thing.”

Danielle Collins discussed her early concerns after receiving an RA diagnosis, while also highlighting the difficulties that women encounter when managing endo. “I remember when I had my diagnosis with RA. At the time, I thought, Oh my gosh, is this the end of my career? I think for women, specifically when you have endometriosis, it can be a little bit more challenging.”

Danielle Collins has received immense support from the tennis world regarding her decision to retire at age 30 in order to concentrate on her personal life and health. But her recent triumphs at the Miami Open and Charleston Open have raised questions about her intended retirement. However, Collins is steadfast in her decision-making and emphasizes the significance of putting her health before her career.

Collins has always been open about her health issues. But being asked again and again about her reason for retirement has also earned the press and media her frustration. She addressed the subject and raised a question about sexism in the athletic world.

After being questioned about her impending retirement, Danielle Collins stated that a male player wouldn’t have to answer as many questions as she had to. “You know, I find it so interesting. Because I kind of felt like when I was announcing my retirement, everyone has been so, like, congratulating me and so excited for me. But then, on the other hand, I feel like I have had to justify my decision a lot,” she said during her Miami Open interviews.

Further adding to it, she declared, “I feel like if I was a guy, I probably wouldn’t have to justify it that much.” The story, however, did not end there. Following her two consecutive victories, she faced more questions on the subject during the post-match interviews. However, Collins dealt with them with her candid response, ultimately acknowledging that it was her choice at the end of the day.
