Simona Halep managed to slip in two Grand Slam titles in the era defined by Serena Williams’ dominance. The Romanian tennis ace is currently one of the most experienced players in WTA. She has seen the power shift take place. She has witnessed the times of complete dominance and now is adapting to the age of new champions emerging with every tournament.

Therefore, when Halep claims something regarding the WTA, one can trust her words. Speaking of which, she recently opened up about the change in WTA’s system. She addressed how the notion of dominant players is slowly starting to fade.

Halep recently spoke about the 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams’ retirement and addressed how the newcomers have the same level of hold on the game as seniors. She said, “You see, from inside, then you cannot actually analyze everyone. But I feel now that tennis is more open and everyone can win any tournament.”

“It’s not just the top players that are winning every tournament and it is not Serena anymore that is dominating tennis. So I feel like tennis is more open and are more opportunities for everyone,” she added. Halep is one of the few players who had the potential to challenge the American legend. In fact, she snatched the 2019 Wimbledon trophy out of the seven times champion’s hands.

When Williams walked out of the circuit owing to a gruesome hamstring injury, Halep decided to partner up with Patrick Mouratoglou, Williams’ former coach. The French tennis coach on-boarded Halep’s team before the clay court season and currently is traveling alongside her.

The former world no.1, after having a semifinal run in the Wimbledon Championships, stepped into the hard court-based tournaments. She at first tried to test her skills in the Citi Open. Though she failed to cope with the heat and following a medical time-out retired from the WTA 250 event.

Thereafter, Halep got the better of Brazilian tennis ace and former world no.15  Beatriz Haddad Maia in the finals of the Canadian Masters. She clinched the trophy in Toronto and suffered an unfortunate thigh injury at the Cincinnati Masters, which later affected her game in the Grand Slam. The 2015 semifinalist incurred an opening round defeat in the US Open.
